Libya is not a "murder spree" on the part of the Obama. It is, in fact, an acknowledgment of our UN treaty obligations to prevent imminent mass murder, thousands of which had occurred before we finally organized limited multilateral intervention. It is a positive step when a US president changes course and uses military forces in limited ways to stand up for moral principles, especially as there is no economic or territorial gain to be had. It does a disservice to the cause of peace to claim that a righteous use of might is wrong. The price of peace is vigilance.

    •  Then that should be good enough for Congress (0+ / 0-)

Last time I checked, Congress had the power to declare war.  Now we all know that if the situation were so clear cut, that the vote would pass with flying colors, right?

the House Republicans would not give President Obama war authority. Their goal is that he fails as president. It doesn't matter how they accomplish that.

The same Republicans who were complaining that we weren't going into Libya then turned and said it was a terrible idea when we did. I think that expecting the majority of this batch of Congressional Republicans to do what's right is naive.

These are the people willing to hold up funds for tornado victims in red states for political purposes after all.

through Congress right now...a good 60 days too late, of course, to have stop Gadaffi's ongoing mass killings, which he was preparing to add to as he ringed Benghazi with heavy artillery. We should not be ashamed that we stopped that.

I do not favor a president having a blank check to intervene, but I think the initial reaction was covered by the War Powers Act, and the current engagement is as an occasional support role in response to NATO treaty obligations. It is not about a declaration of war, which, by the way, the US has not done since WWII.
