    Power is not achieved by prosperity.  Power, to be felt, has to hurt.  Therefor, the people over whom power is to be exercised have to be deprived.  Moreover, since deprivation is relative, if power is to be increased, more people have to be deprived.  People who do good are not perceived as powerful.

    Powerful people may accumulate great wealth.  But, just as often they waste it.  That's because the wealth is merely evidence that the deprivation has been effective.

    Deprivation is perverse in that it targets assets a person doesn't even want for himself.  Deprivation is, in that sense, unselfish and, therefor, difficult to identify.  It seems irrational.  And it is.  Deprivation responds to an emotional deficit, driven by the illusion that one's own insecurity is lessened as another's is increased. Which, if correct, suggests that increasing national security has the effect of making Americans feel less secure.
