    a long history, going back to defining slavery as a legal status.  Human rights have always taken a back seat to property rights.  Had to in order to make slavery legal.  That the ownership of private property is a sop to compensate for the fact that the rights of the person are subject to being disregarded with impunity is not generally recognized.

    It stands to reason that people who recognize the rights of nature would be more sensitive to humans being deprived. On the other hand, the failure to accept ownership of private property as a higher priority is irksome to people who do. People don't much appreciate being shown up as fools.

    I offer the above as explication and amplification; not excuse.
