      Not exactly comparable.

      •  We have 18 months. Hochul had, what 6? (5+ / 0-)

Plus, we have 18 months of not just McHenry, but Ryan and the Boner.

And even if we lose, there's the 50-state strategy, 2016 will be easier if we do the groundwork.

        •  You're almost never going to win an R+17 district. (2+ / 0-)

When we have had one recently it has usually been a combination of a huge Democratic wave year, a candidate who is too conservative to support Pelosi or most of the Democratic priorities, or a historically Democratic district in the South that's shifted Republican.

Jim Matheson of Utah has the most Republican district held by a Dem, and its R+15.  We had some more but we lost them last year.

          •  That's my point. In 2010, the district was R+17. (2+ / 0-)

BFD. The 50-state strategy means that we get our ideas out there, we run someone.

Yeah the DCCC won't offer any money, and yeah, it will be a crappy campaign with, probably, no pros running things, which, for City/County/State races isn't necessarily a bad thing, but House races, you're going to get creamed. BFD. The only real pro you need in a campaign is a campaign finance lawyer, and volunteers to make sure you're not accepting cash from serial killers.

But in 2012, maybe the district isn't R+17 anymore, maybe it's R+10. Because there's 2016, and by then, maybe it's an R+8. Or better. I'll take a blue dog over Patrick McHenry in 2016 who will face a primary challenger in 2018.

My point is, that the 50-state strategy is a long term project, in the same way that the founding of the Heritage Foundation was a long term project. Or Rupert Murdoch buying up a bunch of 500 Watt radio stations in big cities, small towns and, well, really, no where.

If I won the Lottery tomorrow, I'd start buying radio stations in Iowa. And New Hampshire. Influential states as far as picking a president.

Opportunities multiply as they are seized.

            •  Okay, but I wasn't talking about that, (0+ / 0-)

His district is safe now.  It sucks that he's an ass, but for now we can't really do anything about that.

There's a West Wing episode, where Joey Lucas tells a story about a French philosopher sitting at a cafe, when a crowd runs past, and he says, " There are my people! I must find out where they are going, so I may lead them!"

We can do something about every R+n district in the country, if we do it.

They're going to change NC from being a Democratic gerrymander to a Republican one, so instead of packing Republicans into his district, they'll unpack it to add Republicans to Democratic-leaning districts to make them lean Republican.  It'll probably still have a strong Republican advantage though.

would be happy to represent the district. I realize that is probably out of the purview of this site's allowable activities, but maybe not.
