    When we learned "the rules" we began with Bach.  If you go back a hundred years or so earlier, all the way back to the 12th Century through the Renaissance, you will find some very experimental and almost modern sounding music.  It was only with the Baroque, when order and structure began to be of primal importance, that we get the very developed "rules" about music theory.
