    There are different ways to view the subtext. One is that most Congressional districts wouldn't elect a former Black Panther, but that isn't an issue in the one in question, given its political and demographic makeup. That's a potentially neutral reading. I'm guessing your reaction is that because to many Americans old enough to remember, the Black Panthers were perceived as a threatening black power group, mentioning that a Democratic member of Congress used to be a Black Panther is a slam similar to calling a Republican a - well, I don't know, as none are probably old enough to be former John Birchers, and Teabagger carries different connotations.

    For the record, unlike Republicans, I don't have anything against former Black Panthers and think the organization, itself, definitely had good points to it, though we shouldn't get off track discussing those in this thread. :-)
