  •  James Loewen also wrote a piece.... (10+ / 0-)

..earlier this month about the Tulsa riots; and, this wiki page also quotes him as reporting that 75 people were killed and more than 1,100 homes destroyed. Loewen writes about it powerfully in his book "Sundown Towns," and I've been thinking about one of those towns lately, because still no black people live there, and since the Joplin tornado, Greensburg, Kansas has been getting some good press (just google the name).  Sadly, not even an act of God/Mother Nature has allowed black folks to reside there (with the town having been rebuilt ya might think the folks there might let some black folks in); and sadly, none of the media folks now praising Greensburg (including NPR) ever mention that it was and is still a sundown town. (Oh , never mind that).

What would America being saying if a purposefully all-black town were hit by a tornado (like such a town could exist)?  Somehow I doubt the media would be singing its praises for rebuilding.

I know this sounds cold--and I do realize not all residents of today's sundown towns are racists--but when I was first hearing that tornadoes were ripping through a bunch more sundown towns in middle America last week, I thought to myself, "I'll reserve my sympathies for the folks in Japan and Haiti."

Thanks for this diary and thanks for y'all listening to this gay white man's ramblings!
