    My dad joined the Navy the instant he was done with high school (spring 1945), and was sent to California for training. He was to have shipped out to the Pacific Theater ... but it was over before he was even assigned to a ship. He spent his 2-3 years doing clerical work onshore. I am grateful he was spared the horrors of battle, but I am also grateful that he wanted to enlist, come what may.

    The waste, the hideous waste of lives and treasure and resources that war entails. When will we ever learn?
