  •  When I was a kid (in the 1940's) (6+ / 0-)

my mom didn't work and cared for her mom - who died of a stroke, no hospital stay.  Cared for her dad, who then lived with us for several years and later died of a stroke, no hospital stay.  Cared for her mother-in-law, who lived with us until senile dementia made it impossible to care for her - died of a stroke a short time after entering the local state mental hospital.

This is what is facing those 54-year-olds who will be scratching to pay for medicare insurance if the Reps. succeed.

That's why I have long term health insurance which started at $2800/year 9 years ago when I was 64 and just raised to $4700 this year - at 73.  I may never use it, but if I use it for even one year, I'll still be ahead.

Years ago congress passed major medical insurance at a very reasonable cost to seniors and the AARP raised such a stink they repealed it.  Which is why I always use AARP's self stamped envelopes to remind them how stupid they were back then.

Not everyone can get or can afford LTC insurance, but I'd advise them to try if they can.  Just sayin'
