  •  Here's a GA Congressman who objected (16+ / 0-)

    Rep. Tom Graves

He does have a point, it sets a dangerous precedent.

Members of Congress are not allowed to cast votes in absentia.  Isn't an auto pen signature similar?

    •  Yes, it is (6+ / 0-)

We wouldn't allow him to have Joe Biden forge his name - but a gadget can do it?

      •  I don't see that as a problem (1+ / 0-)

        Why is that a problem?

We have many different types of tools to allow us to operate over large distances.

If it's purely a legal issue, I can understand that.  The law is a strange animal.

If it's about the "correctness" of it, then I don't quite get it.

        •  But when it comes to governing (1+ / 0-)

the rule has always been that you have to be present to exercise your vote in government.

I'm kind of surprised this happened.  Obama has always (wrongly IMHO) been an advocate for keeping the Patriot Act.  One would think he could have arranged his schedule to sign a bill he regards so highly.

          •  So what's wrong with it (0+ / 0-)

If the implication is that he did it to avoid the visibility, fine.

I don't think that the issue itself is worth being overly concerned about.

But if the issue is that one would prefer to have him sign it so that he is seen physically signing it, then great.

            •  Welcome to the 21st Century (0+ / 0-)

We can have surgeons working from half way around the world with video hookups. And thanks to a law signed (by hand by Clinton) a digital signature is as good as the real thing.

To require the adoption and utilization of digital signatures by Federal agencies and to encourage the use of digital signatures in private sector electronic transactions.

While that seems to only be for electronic forms some are suggesting that if an electronic system is used to capture then reproduce the signature then it has to be allowed under that 1999 law.

As soon as you have people telling other people how to live/think/behave because "god gave them authority" you effectively get dictators in funny looking hats.

with the autopen (as opposed to the Patriot Act) than that the name lends itself to being turned into a cartoon name. You otto know!
