    Factual:

It should never be used as fertilizer ... but must be treated and handled in an appropriate manner. We do it this way: ...

    True:

This diary should at once make you thankful for your flush toilet ...

    Amen, thankful I am.

Interesting diary, and outstanding privy! Extra credit for the granite burials, too! Just one question: Does the composting just go on hold for the winter months, waiting for thaw, or does the ground stay above freezing?

Why is there a Confederate Flag flying in Afghanistan?

    •  The ground is frozen solid (7+ / 0-)

from about December until March. Or February, depending. Topsoil is only about six inches deep most place. The roots of the junk spruce that grows here are mostly exposed, the soil is that thin.

It does, however, make an ideal place for blueberries to grow, as it is not only thin but also quite acid. Our berries, blue and otherwise, are superb. The coniferous forest also helps with the growth of wild chanterelle mushrooms, which are delicious and plentiful. Also, apple and cherry trees grow here, too.

Craft is what emerges when you hit inspiration over the head with a stick.

    •  Actually, human waste is used as fertilizer. At (4+ / 0-)

the point it is deemed 'sludge' by waste treatment plants it is sold and used as fertilizer. It is widely used on sod farms, they dump it into ponds then water is sprayed on it to break it down and the mix, once liquefied, is then sprayed onto the sod fields. No shit...pun intended...
Extremely interesting diary though, I see privies every once in awhile and always wonder when I do if people still use them. I am about a year out on moving to a somewhat remote location and going off grid and one of my big expense issues is a septic system. I have to have it in the area I am moving to but it's good to know what you have written, may come in handy for temporary facilities.
