    This is certainly true of the entering college scene.  Boys are really getting underrepresented these days.

    As a Biology faculty member, we jump on minority students because it looks so good to recruit them.  It is way better than when I was in graduate school.  I remember being at a meeting and naming all the minority scientists we knew.  I don't know why this is still true, given how hard we try to accept minorities into our programs.  Given the level of affirmative action, there should be much more of an effect.  At some level, it might be choice.  I know that female engineers are more underrepresented due to simply not preferring the field as much as men do.  

    Interestingly, if anyone is still reading this, my own field was way ahead of the curve in terms of the number of truly prominent women.  Maize genetics.  Think McClintock.  We wondered if the elder stateswomen was the reason.
