  •  My first time to CA in 1984 (I think?) (5+ / 0-)

I was here on vacation from Colorado and I didn't really like CA that much. We spent one week in SF and then drove down the coast to LA for a few days. I think it was the company I was keeping at the time. He and I didn't travel well together which is the true test of a relationship as far as I'm concerned! (wink)

    •  I have two criteria for "getting serious": (5+ / 0-)

First, you have to take a road trip with me. I LOVE road trips, and I love all travel. My ex and I, though we didn't always see eye to eye on everything were excellent travelling  companions. Our two-month-plus "grand tour" of Western and Eastern Europe (where he had previously visited and I had previously lived for several years) was an absolute success. Marred only by the fact that he couldn't drive a stick, and our rented VW Golf had one. He amused himself by being an expert navigator and map-man and by assembling the toys in Kinder™ Eggs and placing them on the dashboard. And endless Elton John CDs, which I tolerated. I'm one of those boring Classical music guys.

Secondly, you have to be able to spend at least three days in a row on my island without having to get off the rock and dealing with the outdoor plumbing. If you can't do that, you can't marry me. LOL.

    •  I want to add this: (5+ / 0-)

My ex loved geography. We are both able to draw an accurate free-hand map of both the US and Canada and Europe (including the British Isles) and put the capitol cities where they belong. We used to amuse ourselves practicing this on lazy weekend afternoons here in Maine.

I understand that Sen. Franken is also known to be able to draw such a map of the US.

      •  Very cool... (5+ / 0-)

... I used to love to spread a map out on the floor and look at places I've traveled to.

That makes me realize that Google maps and GPS are going to be the death of people being able to read a map and know where places lie.

      •  That is pretty awesome (5+ / 0-)

Never been that good at geography myself.  More of a numbers guy, love doing math in my head.  That, and knowing more lyrics, songs, and artists than anybody should waste their brain on (:
