  •  Baker: Only amazing thing is that somebody might (1+ / 0-)

think this needs to be said.

It's been obvious to many of us for the last couple of years.

The housing situation is truly horrendous.

Foreclosures are often the single largest category of homes sold where I live (40 miles west of Chicago) and that destroys housing prices.
Destroyed housing prices freezes people in place who might be able to relocate for new jobs, and/or decimates the viability of banks.

In fairness to the current political "leaders" -

There is one major difference between the 1930s and now.  Our problem isn't just the deficit, but the accumulated debt.  We've got a ton of it.  That's a problem FDR didn't face.

Still, the situation is pretty much what Baker says: demand will not magically appear. Somebody has to spend money, and it's probably going to be money we don't have.

    One thing is absolutely certain:

America doesn't work if Americans don't work. Wanna fix health care (I sure do), carbon emissions, etc?  Get people working, or, better still, do the heavy lifting to get them working on the fixes.  People who aren't afraid their kids will starve are much more willing to deal with other problems.

Instead of going to the Fed, however, I will go about my congenial professional existence as a professor at M.I.T., where I have taught and researched since 1966, and I will take advantage of some of the many opportunities that come to a Nobel laureate. So don’t worry about me.

But we should all worry about how distorted the confirmation process has become, and how little understanding of monetary policy there is among some of those responsible for its Congressional oversight. We need to preserve the independence of the Fed from efforts to politicize monetary policy and to limit the Fed’s ability to regulate financial firms.

      and

Last year, the Senate Banking Committee twice approved Peter Diamond’s nomination to the Federal Reserve. And twice, the Senate wasn’t allowed to vote on Diamond because Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and a handful of his far-right colleagues threw tantrums for unknown reasons.

why the GOP sucks is why the Democrats suck.

The grown-ups and leaders are few and far between regardless of whether they carry (R) or (D) after their names.

Worst of all, the listeners are nowhere to be found.

sorry, but the reasonable and the "say no" party aren't the same. We have the Nobels on one side trying to improve things and the Shelbys on the other.

Those who don't get that are part of the problem, you know.  ;-P

I must have missed the news.

                  •  That might be a little better, but you can draw a (0+ / 0-)

list of serious Republicans, too -- and, much as teeth might grate around here -- I would include my other Senator, Mark Kirk, on that list even with his "enhanced" military resume.  For that matter, I would include one-time Playgirl centerfold Scott Brown, if only because I like politicians who actually go out and meet a lot of their constituents.

i don't mind that list... but short as it is, that's it for the GOP.
