  •  I was eight years old in 1942 (7+ / 0-)

The grocery store on our corner in Central Los Angeles was owned by a Japanese couple.  One day they were gone and an Anglo was running the store.
My mother took me down there while she told the new "owner" that we would never set foot in that store again.  And we didn't.

Every summer, my aunt and uncle would take my cousin and me up to Lake Tahoe from LA.  We would start at 3:00 AM since driving through the desert in a 1938 Chevy Sedan with no air conditioning would be very uncomfortable.  Just as the sun would be coming up we would pass Manzanar.  We could see the perimeter lights of the camp.  My aunt and uncle would always comment on how wrong it was to do what was being done to the Japanese American citizens.  They felt helpless to do anything about it.  I can still feel their frustration.

We don't seem to be any smarter today.
