  •  Yeah, because a person with his lack of experience (20+ / 0-)

would have had a difficult time landing a gig at any other university. These being tough economic times, and all.

(I believe that's what the youngins call "snark".)

of Chicago?  Yeah not likely.   He could easily get a lecturer position at some place but a tenured position would be harder if not impossible to come by

      •  Lecturer? Are you joking? (2+ / 0-)

Lesser-known people may end up as lecturers, because universities chase after people with big names, who keep the schools' standings high. Like Goolsbee.

    •  Well, your snark would be well placed had it not (8+ / 0-)

been established as far back as the beginning of the Obama administration that Goolsbee was on leave...yes, on leave, from the University of Chicago. In fact, Mr. Snark, just type in the words "On leave from the University of Chicago" in your google search and items referring to Austan Goolsbee will miraculously appear.

This was not something he just decided on the spur of the moment. And perhaps Goolsbee, as you suggested, could have landed a gig at any other University had he served 4 or 8 years with the President, but that is assuming that Goolsbee wasn't happy with the University of Chicago, or wasn't happy living in Chicago, or perhaps didn't have a home and family, with children going to school, in chicago.... How wise you are about this individuals's private needs....(snark)?

    •  There are no other schools of this caliber (2+ / 0-)

in Chicago. Northwestern is great but not in this particular field (its B-school specializes in marketing, not finance). Getting position elsewhere would require him to move. And UChicago is in top 3 in his field so any other position wouldn't be a promotion.

is one of the top economic schools in the country. He already has tenure. The students are top notch. It's probably the best position in the country for him.
