    When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.
    attributed to Mark Twain was a real source of strength for me when my wife and I contemplated and embarked on parenthood ourselves.  Seeing it come true in my own life gave me faith that it might come true again with my own children.
