    The reason that new LSA aircraft are so expensive is product liability.  Older planes don't have that problem.  Airplane ownership might be worth looking into.  It's not too hard to find an older plane that you could sell for about what you paid for it if the job situation gets worse.  First step is to look into hangar rent where you're located.  Think about going without hull insurance for "in motion" accidents.  This protects you against hail storms and so forth.

    If I were single, I might be in the market myself.  Spousal support has a lot to do with it, plus the "been there, done that" factor.  

    Investigate the availability/cost of maintenance in your area.  Good luck.

      I'm also in the "spousal support" category.
      My main ambition would be to earn commercial and CFI certificates so I've got a goal, and something to do later after/if I ever retire from my day job.  These ratings don't guarantee flying for pay of for free, but they're a step in that direction.
      You're right about the liability picture; that damped GA participation long ago, unfortunately.
