  •  You need a crisis to move the entrenched... (0+ / 0-)

Just about every day I get another e-mail from NN, asking me to attend as a paying customer or volunteer. Clearly they have a lot of empty seats and volunteer slots to fill and aren't finding enough takers.

My goal is to make NN an conference for all progressives, regardless of where they live, income, etc... And I get real ticked when they come carpetbagging to my old home town and state and make like they're great inclusive progressives when they ain't. So I'm fired up, and I can keep this up all week if need be. But the library closes at five, so NN's staffers will get a break in a bit...

show up and volunteer, and use the opportunity to make connections and brainstorm ways to bring more of the issues you care about to the table. Start a fund to bring low-income bloggers to NN. Fundraise for it. But whining about how elitist you think the conference as it exists now is, and backing out of volunteering because you can't see your pet ideas represented on the schedule...well, frankly, I'm not impressed.

He'd come if we broke open the agenda three days before the conference to organize something on his preferred issues.

protesting that My Issues were not addressed, but I'll be volunteering to help with my registration, attending as many sessions as possible about issues that all tie in directly or indirectly with My Issues, networking with people Outside My Socioeconomic and/or Lifestyle class, enjoying the social conversation that leads to unexpected collaborations and interest in both My and Your issues and hopefully managing to have a good time.

Unless you wanna let me re-engineer the agenda when I get there Wednesday...

      •  Urban and Rural poor are not pet ideas. (1+ / 0-)

How hard is this to understand.  I realize a lot of you are chafing at the way RuralRoute is explaining this all to you, but the general point still stands: The poor have less access to this conference and thus their interests will be less represented.

I refuse to represent my political beliefs using numbers. It isn't accurate, nor is it helpful. But I'm around a -10 on both scales.

is the diarist's choice to a) bring this up three days before the conference starts instead of months ago, when there might have been some chance to do something about it and b) decision to back out of volunteering based on the agenda. Several solutions have been presented to help low-income folks attend, but the diarist has shot down or ignored them.

If the diarist is so fired up that he/she wants to keep this up all week and is trying to create a "crisis", as stated above, that's energy that could be put to better use constructively, say, by finding funding to help include more low-income attendees.

re: attendance, we're over our numbers from last year. Expecting this to be the biggest NN ever.
