    on Medicaid as on Medicare they'll lose their base and throw the upcoming election away. To do otherwise would be nothing more than cynical pandering to a powerful interest group at the expense of one even more in need but less powerful -- a complete betrayal of everything the Democratic Party exists to promote.

    The only reason not to, given public opinion, is that the robber barons are more important to them than their constituents. This is a real and direct test for the party's viability. They can't afford to flunk it.

    Conservatism explained: Carrots for the rich and the corporate. Sticks for the workers and the poor. It really is that simple.
