    I think having a fixed threshold, even if it is not always hit is more aspirational.

    Perhaps I should say, our goal should be both. I think know I want the educational system to aspire to get students to a place where they have a good grounding that leaves them open to pursue the widest range of options possible when they get out of mandatory schooling.

    I think part of a goal of a better place is aiming for them to be better both in areas they are strongest but also in areas where they are not. One thing I tend to notice surprisingly often in homeschooling and unschooling diaries is people who give up on math, which tends to be a very delayed gratification subject (unlike reading).
