  •  Agree with your observation that one (0+ / 0-)

should teach if one wishes to fully learn a body of knowledge.  I observed this in myself as a junior faculty member in a medical school (little off topic - sorry), in the sense that I noticed that, if I was unable to coherently explain the matter at hand, I began to understand that the fault was that I didn't understand it very well myself.  I also strongly support the concept that no single method is ever going to be able to accomodate all the different learning styles and needs of a large group of students, and it is likely only a matter of luck if it is found to do so for a small group (like a quarter landing heads twenty times in a row, except that said quarter would need eight or ten faces to represent all the different student learning styles).  Lastly, I think there is truth to the assertion that some Republicans are more inclined to consider innovative learning concepts than some of us are.  The problem with that lies mostly in the fact that their core value seems mostly to be an attempt to destroy the public school system rather than revive it, and to embrace home schooling not as an innovative learning method to enhance learning achievement but rather as a tool to discourage learnning by employing a more or less non-science based, magical world view (in the words of Asimov, "To surrender to ignorance and call it God has always been premature, and it remains premature today.").

    •  It amazes me some times how much educators... (0+ / 0-)

and human development scientists are at such odds over what is developmentally appropriate for kids and not have that become an issue.

        •  Appreciate you acknowledging the discussion... (0+ / 0-)

I feel I owe it to people willing to take the time to read my piece and venture a comment to try and acknowledge and respond in a way that brings out rather than tamps down the discussion.
