The entire country seems to hold Berlusconi in contempt, but they cannot seem to get rid of him.

    •  I know and that is what is so frightening. (9+ / 0-)

Media totally trumps the citizenry.  It is unbelievable and furthermore, his television stations show absolute crap that is insulting to human intelligence.

Hopefully this last round of voting will finally mean curtains for him.

big media that surprises me a bit is how more of them aren't nakedly pro-labor i.e. i'm surprised that a major network hasn't taken a nakely populist pro-labor platform.

First of all, Fox has cornered the wingnut market- they're not going to grow much and nobody else is going to outnut them.

MSNBC has the new left outlook i.e. LGBT, enviros, etc. which is great.

But nobody wants to take on the plutocrats with a nakely pro-labor stance.  I know it would be a (slight) challenge, since corporate advertisers are a concern, but eyeballs would be eyeballs.

capitalist ownership managerial class are very good at making Italians or Scandinavians - or Cubans for that matter- seem utterly and completely different than you or me.  A nearly different species.

The bottom line is that we're all completely similar and we all respond stereotypically to effective propaganda.

I am saying that even with what is pretty much a critical mass - which is something that we do not have in the US - they are still struggling to get rid of the guy.  I think that this whole globalization, particularly in the financial markets, has created a scenario where it is going to be harder to get the pendulum
            to swing back.

As for the television stations, it is like some kind of bizarre game show party or festivity that is going on every time that I flip through the Italian channels.  I saw plenty of crap when I was in the US too, but it was a different kind of Kitsch.  Not better, not worse, just different.   There is a lot of European TV here and I can say that it is different, but just as I remember in the US, some of it is good and some of it is crap.

They are really wildly against him by an extraordinary margin, yet he seems to be able to stay right where he is.

I do not see enough push back in the US - we still have a lot of people that don't get it, but I am surprised by how hard it has been for a strong consensus to get action.
