  •  False Equivelencies abound.. (67+ / 0-)

The current state of right wing media is in your face partisan, period, end of story. It is like watching a Christian program, there is no limit to how strident their views and opinions can be in complete disregard for fact finding or truth telling. The left as it exists today in the MSM is far more subtle and no one can tell me that CBS, NBC or ABC exists solely to present an opposing viewpoint to something they perceived as the mainstream bias in the nation. CNN originally started out as the worlds newer version of the BBC. It quickly saw that the domestic market for news was far different than the one preferring a BBC type approach. Ratings and profits trumped everything else and they still do. By calling out a Diane Sawyer for a misrepresentation of one story while ignoring the constant state of misrepresentation of almost every story by all the media personalities on Fox, Wallace has engaged in a sense of false equivalency. One story does not make a propaganda machine. On Fox news, you have anchors who have openly committed to a partisan position. To this day, I have no idea how Diane Sawyer votes, I do not know Brian Williams politics, Katy never said she was a liberal, Walter Cronkite never said he was a Democrat.

Yet on Fox, we have Hume openly declaring his politics. We have Fox and Friends openly hostile to any liberal policy. We have Hannity, Beck, Orielly, Van Sustern, Giraldo, Huckabee, North, Kasich, Morris and many many more openly stating their politics while asking us to view them as objective observers and journalists.

The Wallace show would have more credibility if it focused on the facts and having experts in the subject material discuss the facts. But he avoids it. On the subject of health care, has he ever had anything close to the honesty and transparency of a Frontline special on the worlds different health care sytems? Has he ever interviewed the top climate scientists? Has he ever explained basic economic theory without using an economist that is already biased towards one position? No.

This is the main point Stewart is making. The news does NOT exist to educate and reveal facts. Our news system is not concerned with anything but ratings and profits. That is why we do not have Al Jeezera here. They are the Arab version of the BBC. That is why they villify NPR, why PBS is laughed at and why they never, ever have someone you have never heard of discuss an issue objectively and factually without interruption. There is no responsibility to the public except to provide them with something they already want to hear. Wallace states that his viewers are satisfied because they finally get to hear the other side. What is the other side of a truthful statement? What good is a new organization that first determines what their audience wants to hear and then provides it to them in heaping portions?

I would argue that there is not a functioning press anymore in the MSM at all. One side is frantically trying to get sponsors to pay the exhorbitant salaries of a Diane Sawyer. The other side is doing the same. That is it.

Liberalism is a label used by the right to obscure our true agenda which is really nothing but the use of pragmatism instead of ideology.

An excellent commentary Sinan. I'm 62 years old and have been a newshound all of my life. The days of Murrow, Cronkite, Huntley/Brinkley et al. are OVER. There is no legitimate single source for the news. Truth has become irrelevant and has been replaced by the Illusion of Truth. I have finally stopped watching the evening network news altogether. In the crazy-ass world we live in now with three wars, looming economic collapse and out of control nuclear reactors, NBC News' lead story the other night was about the effectiveness of sunscreen and the reliability of sunscreen classifications.  NBC news now ends the 22 minutes of "news" with 5 minutes of "Making a Difference" feel-good stories. People watch this crap and feel as if they're informed?

The Networks belong to monolithic corporations that no longer separate business from information. Information now drives business and General Electric who makes billions off of the defense and homeland security industries can't even remotely be considered a source of information. They don't have to lie; they just have to omit some elements and emphasize others. The result is the same.

all seem to be People Magazine/National Inquirer now in themes. Witness how they jump from Anthony Weiner features to Casey Anthony features, with Libya, Syria, economy, Greece, climate change, etc. either squeezed in for a few seconds or a brief scroll at the bottom of the screen.

Monday to Friday, and have been doing so for years. I don't get it since I no longer get satellite TV, but I keep it bookmarked

Bill Moyers is right ,(paraphrasing) mainstream media is afraid of real journalists, and she will not get much, if any, airtime on the Sunday talk shows.
It is on over 850 radio, TV and satellite stations , but I hope Keith Olberman gives Amy Goodman a recurring spot on CurrentTV, or at least link to their show each day.

opinion? Freaks & Friends, Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly, Giraldo, etc., are all opinion shows and not news.  When I watch the Fox local news it's usually straight unbiased news sometimes the news personality will make a biased remark trying to be funny when they need to stick to reading the news.

      that was my first reaction.

And to varying degrees now...even the NYT bends over backwards to paint this "other" side.  Like they don't want to insult flat earthers when they are talking about the space shuttle.

What is really happening is that our media is consistently and more rapidly than we are willing to admit becoming a sophisticed propoganda tool for corporatist fascism.

Dissent does not have to be eradicated, it only has to be marginalized and shoved under a tin foil hat. But make no mistake about it. This country is suppressing much more truth than it is revealing. It prefers specialized ignorance over well rounded knowledge, a mass of fat and happy infotainted brains who have been conditioned to avoid the truth since there is no truth anymore, there is only opinion, and it is not very entertaining, either.

As we swirl round the sink hole of history, smirking badgers like Wallace will guard the lie, and his Charlie McCarthy mouth will move as directed by the gestapo hand that is shoved up his ass.

The worst is during election season when a huge chunk of all that corporate free speech is spent on the networks and they want as much of it as they can get. More free speech means more money for ads. The constitution is a great starting point. It needs updating.
