I'm not as interested in the Genes, and I've got no time for anyone making arguments of any sort based on genetics, it's the culture that's always interested me.

But what I wonder is what is the difference between the male haplotype studies and the female mitochondrial studies?

What definitions are we using for genetic and culturo-linguistic groups?

If the female mitochondrial stuff is fairly uniform across europe (which is my understanding, and it could be wrong) then what accounts for the wide variances in male genetics?

Does that essentially mean that the women are the original Britons, and we menfolk are the invaders? Boadicea might agree with that sentiment, I think.

By the by, everything you say in your post below this one is absolutely correct, and what bothers me is all the research I've done that shows the disdain with which those anglo-scots treated gaidhlig language and culture before incidents like the Pairc Deer Raids and the Battle of the Braes clearly showed that if they didn't do something quickly, they'd have a pan-gaelic revolution on their hands.

That was the main reason for using Scottish troops in Ireland. The hope was that when dead Scots came home to Scotland, it would produce antipathy towards the Irish, but more importantly, towards Irish ideas. It was probably the only thing that kept John MacLean and the Red Clydesiders from taking over.

And Clydside that existed long before the English. And will continue long after the English.
