  •  Nobody owns a tag (22+ / 0-)

    Tags are for finding diaries.

Tags are not for irritating others.

No one has proprietary rights to a tag.

This is an area where we may need to develop some policy. Below is my unofficial opinion only.

If you want to use a group name as a tag, because your diary is about that group, and someone using the tag would want to find your diary, that can be appropriate.

If the point of your diary is to piss off people in the other group, it's probably not appropriate regardless of how it is tagged.

In general, it's probably not polite to use a series tag on your diary unless there is consent from the series originator that your diary is correctly part of that series. (Series being different from groups, even though many series have turned into groups.)

Groups give you control over what appears in the group; the whole point of tags is that they are not controlled by any one entity. We allow community members to add tags that the author might not have considered.

It comes back to motivation: is that tag application to help other people or is it to create mischief?

The tag versions are being captured; they're just not visible to users at this time.

      In short form -

Tag to Help Not to Hurt

I am a statistician, not a magician although we are easily confused. I guess that explains why people keep trying to tie me in chains and place me under water.

    •  Tags have never worked like that before (4+ / 0-)

Lots of people want to read what outsiders are saying about the group.  You have cut off their ability to do that.

One person will think a critical diary is helpful and interesting, while a group member might consider it 'mischief'.

What you're basically saying is that any diary critical of a group here should be buried.

    •  We knocked this around at GUS (6+ / 0-)

and the general consensus is that if someone wants to write a GUS call out diary that it would not be particularly harmful if it had a GUS tag.

It comes back to motivation: is that tag application to help other people or is it to create mischief?

The tag would be the least of the trouble . . .

    •  the start of this is a tag that was a series long (0+ / 0-)

before 4 existed and the same tagging protocol has been followed since we started the diary series.

That's why we objected and it's no different than it ever has been except this one diarist insisted on using the series name in a diary calling out one comment in one diary that had 2 recs from a group of 76.....

This has come up before and has never been a problem.

The diarist in question has had problems with our series existing on kos before and imo, that's the reason for the kerfluffle, not a genuine desire to help categorize diaries...
