in "national character".  Being Jewish is not a national character.  It is a racial and/or religious character.  So, Jonathan, to revamp your question:

Do I advocate deleting the racial character of any other state?

Yes.  For example, the Libyan Arab Jamihariya.  Why is it "Arab'?  What of the Berbers?  Are they not Libyan too?

A nation should be blind to race.  Period.  An American is an American (I hate the hyphenation of America).  A Libyan is a Libyan.  And an Israeli should be an Israeli.

    •  OK, so I'm sure you can show me where (0+ / 0-)

you've advocated against Libyan Arab Jamihariya. Or Saudia Arabia. Or Iran. Or any other Moslem state. Or Catholic. Or Japan.

Then I won't have to think you're singling out, alone among races or religions, the Jewish character of a state.

      •  Sure. (0+ / 0-)

I don't think I've commented on Libya, that I recall, but I will if either I write a diary or comment in a diary about them.  Which is a good idea for a diary, actually, in light of the Kaddafi arrest warrant.

However, I criticize Iran and other Muslim nations here.  Scroll down to see my follow-up comment as well.

        •  FAIL (0+ / 0-)

The stuff you wrote there has nothing to do with the racial or religious nature of the countries.

          •  Really? (0+ / 0-)
I am a Sunni Muslim, and I cannot pretend to understand Shi'a Islam, so I can't really speak to why the very religious supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamanei, treats his people in such an un-Islamic manner.  I do not understand it myself, unless he too is a charlatan.

Thats not a criticism of the Ayatollah based on religion?  And my follow up:

And I didn't mean to imply that I did think he was a charlatan.  Just threw that out there as one possibility for his actions.  The other, of course, is what you highlight...that he truly is deeply religious but somehow misinterprets the Holy Qu'ran to allow for such repression.

Sounds like religious criticism to me.  As is this:

Some of them put on a veneer of piety, but it is basically a lie.  They make prayers for show...and that is something they will answer for one day to Allah (swt).

I have a doctors appointment, but will, insha'allah, continue this discussion later if desired.

            •  Really (0+ / 0-)

You didn't say Iran shouldn't be an officially Islamic state, which it very much is.

              •  The nature of the Iranian Government (0+ / 0-)

is entirely up to the people of Iran, just as the nature of the Israeli government is up to the people of Israel.  The people of Iran, in 1979 at least, made the choice of an Islamic Republic. I will not criticize them making that choice at that time, or even them maintaining that system up until approximately June of 2009.  After that date, the government of Iran, in my opinion, became illegitimate because of electoral fraud, and the current Supreme Leader not only failed to intervene to correct the fraud, but actively supported the fraudulently elected President.  At this time, in June of 2011, I support the will of the Iranian people.  That is another battle for another day, and one not far in the future.

There. Critical enough?  As you may notice, I said in there that is is up to Israel as to what its nature will be or should be.  I don't deny that at all.  Do Jews have the right to choose a Jewish nature for Israel?  Absolutely.  But by that same token, Arabs have a right to choose an Islamic nature, or a Christian nature, or whatever.

Point is, everyone has rights.  The key to democracy is balancing those rights.  Declaring Israel as Jewish, and only Jewish, destroys any hope of that balance, and poisons Israeli democracy.
