There has really been an acceleration in advances in clean energy sources over just the past 5 years. Solar cells have been decreasing in cost per Watt over the past year, and it recently dropped to $1 per Watt, which no analyst predicted even a couple of years ago. So I think that there's a realistic chance that science will end up bailing us out on this, first with advances in solar PV technology and later perhaps with fusion. Can't be sure about it, but I can walk around with hope. That said, we all can play a part in it by doing all we can to support these technologies.

    •  Well, my family's doing its part. (0+ / 0-)

My father and his partner have another major new solar PV design... and a new energy storage design.  They should, if successful, but a major improvement on the status quo.  (Better yet, they actually can be combined with other recent improvements.)

I am at this point also hoping that the technology will drive the economics: renewable energy will be too cheap for anything else to be tolerated, and that may give us a chance.

Read pp. 1-7 of Krugman's _The Great Unraveling_ (available from Google Books). NOW.
