  •  FL-23 Alcee Hastings sexual harassment claim (1+ / 0-)

Alcee Hastings is under fire for ethical behavior, again.  First bribery, now, perhaps sexual harassment, unless this is some kind of right wing dirty tricks hit.  The accuser appears to he a GOP activist who is trying to sell books.

In 1988 Hastings was impeached as a Federal Judge for bribery for taking money in exchange for lenient sentences.  The House Impeached him on a 413 - 3 vote and the Senate convicted him  on a vote of 69 -26.  He revived his political career winning election to the house in 1992 and currently ranks 49th in Seniority among House Democrats.

Now TheHill is reporting sexual harassment complaints against him

According to Judicial Watch, Packer unsuccessfully attempted to bring her complaints to the commission, the House Ethics Committee and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), commission co-chairman.

Packer has spoken on Jamaican television shows about the sexual harassment allegations while promoting her novel, titled A Personal Agenda. The book centers around the murder of a black ex-congressman who had troubles with corruption and extramarital affairs.

The lawsuit says that Packer “was particularly vulnerable to such threats because she was a Republican working for the Democratically controlled commission.”

I am curious, the article asserts the purported harassment victim was particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment because of her partisan leanings.

Why would a Republican be particularly vulnerable to harassment?  They must be asserting other Democrats dismissed her complaint because she was an activist Republican accusing a Democratic Congressman.  But she is also selling books and the whole thing might be about publicity.

I can't recall a recent serious primary challenge to Hastings.

    Hmmmm.  Thoughts?

    •  He's a disgrace to the House of Representatives, (4+ / 0-)

and that's saying a lot!  I don't even care if these charges are true or not -- the man belongs in jail more than he does in Congress for what he did as a judge.  Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll get shuffled out of a district/lose a primary next year.

in the same body that impeached him as a federal judge is disgraceful.

      FL-23 is a black-majority district.

I attempted to drew a "fair" FL map of the sort that people who got the Fair Districts initative passed might have had in mind and couldn't make two black-majority seats in South Florida. (The one formerly held by Kendrick Meek is actually reasonably compact and practical.)

      1. I don't think that law has any teeth. With a Republican trifecta I expect another blatant GOP gerrymander, which means keeping FL-23 much like it is now.

      2. I'm not sure there's any interest on anyone's part to eliminate any black-majority districts in Florida given the legal and political complications.

That's why the GOP has filed suit, the only way around it is to strike it down. There's no telling what the court will do, but the case against the amendments is weak at best, since they do make exceptions for the VRA.
