I've been thinking about Bachmann in the VP slot and I can't see it happening. If, say, Romney won the nomination and chose her as VP, the dominant storyline would be that Romney repeated John McCain's big mistake. The media narrative could end up writing its own fate because as soon as she has her first gaffe, the media will go wild and Bachmann will blame the media and suddenly we're back in 2008. I think the GOP establishment will put severe pressure on presumptive nominee Romney to pick someone much safer.

except that I don't think Romney would need to be pressured to avoid Bachmann. He knows he would have to pick a social conservative to satisfy the base, but it has to be someone who doesn't scare independents to win the general. I suspect it'll be Thune or Pawlenty. I think people would see them as plausible presidents. Bachmann, no.

The more I think about it, the more I think that Perry is angling for the VP slot. Perry would actually make a decent VP for the GOP.

      •  Then they're screwed on the VP choice (0+ / 0-)

if Perry represents a decent candidate.  Why not go for someone like John Thune or Pat Toomey who are certainly orthodox conservatives and popular in their home states?

          1) Because the GOP is not going to take away their chance at gaining a majority in the Senate by removing two GOP Senators (especially one in a Lean Democratic swing state).

          2) Because I'll support anything which might remove Perry from a position of power within Texas. :)

      •  A secessionist would make a decent VP? (0+ / 0-)

That's crazy talk! Maybe the Party of Lincoln doesn't mind loose talk about secession, but in a general election, you bet your ass that would be an issue!
