After this initial reduction, our troops will continue coming home at a steady pace as Afghan Security forces move into the lead. Our mission will change from combat to support. By 2014, this process of transition will be complete, and the Afghan people will be responsible for their own security.
    •  Well then why does... (0+ / 0-)

...Rep. McGovern say "counrterterrorism doesn't require 70,000 boots on the ground."  -- ? That implies 70,000 will likely still be there in 2014.

        room.

He's running for re-election and you know the GOP is going to look for ways to make any accomplishment of his look bad.  Making a hard, fast promise about a situation as fluid as war just isn't smart political strategy.

Representative McGovern knows perfectly well that this is not "counterterrorism." It's a battle against a well-constituted and well-armed insurgency aimed at overthrowing the Afghan government and replacing it with an Islamist government run out of Islamabad.

Rep. McGovern also knows that any counter-insurgency expert will tell you that you need a 4:1 ratio of troops to insurgents to defeat an insurgency. The Taliban have an estimated 25,000 fighters in theater and can bring in reinforcements from Pakistan very quickly.

So we can see that we had something close to the minimum very briefly, though we can tell from the increasing number of attacks that it still wasn't enough, due to Pakistani activity. Be that as it may, this is an unwinnable war because we cannot operate on the ground in Pakistan, which is the real center of Taliban power, arms, and funding.

So what is really being said is that we are going to give Afghanistan to the Taliban to do with what they will. We will see what that is.

I remember well all the executions and torture of both men and women. Some very good friends of mine, Hazars, are survivors of the Hazara massacres done by the Pashtun Taliban. I hope those atrocities will not be repeated. Hope is not very reassuring to me, nor to the people of India.

It's disturbing to me to see a Representative come in here throwing raw meat, regardless of the very real consequences.

        •  Good points except... (0+ / 0-)

... for the raw meat thing.  Condescending and implies Reps know better than us when most times I find the opposite is the case.

          •  Well, he sure got the response he wanted, (0+ / 0-)

didn't he? IME, intelligent reps like this know exactly how to play the crowd. All surface and emotion, no analysis.
