  •  Hey, we should crowd-source a piece (10+ / 0-)

    on this.

I would love to have people better at math and microeconomics to actual PROVE that the ROI on basic research simply doesn't work for private companies.

So we could do case study after case study of pure free-ridership by corporations on publicly-funded tech - and then mathematically show exactly why this is essentially an economic law.

    •  If I catch your drift correctly, (11+ / 0-)

we could then use this economic law as an argument for why it makes economic sense for companies to pay taxes to a government that conducts basic research (or, rather, pays for it via grants to universities, scientific institutions) - and why there is a justification for governments to actually demand these taxes, too:

The companies profit from this arrangement. It's to their benefit to have 'government take over'.

      •  Precisely (4+ / 0-)

It is a corollary to this thesis that the plutocrats no longer care about companies or wealth creation or economic growth. All they need to do now is maintain their incredible wealth - or use financial "engineering" to "create" "wealth".

They simply don't care about this stuff any more.

a competitive manufacturing sector as a base for the rest of the economy.

A reliance on the financial sector may be good for the plutocracy, but only a strong manufacturing sector is able to provide the jobs America needs: middle-class jobs that employ well-educated, well-motivated workers and secure the financial well-being of individual workers as well as the survival of America's middle class as a whole.
