  •  I have never met a police officer I liked. (3+ / 0-)

Well, I liked our elementary school hall monitor, when no one else did, but then again, no one liked me, either.

I have a really good friend that was both an OK state trooper and later a Special Agent In Charge for the DEA. I like him just fine. We used to smoke [redacted] together.

The problem I have with the police is a political one. In my short lifetime (42 years) I have seen them from being your neighborhood patrollman to donning riot gear and carrying machine guns to bust a guy who didn't pay his child support. It is total overkill. It is unnecessary. It is, frankly, disgusting. It is frightening. If I had kids, I would tell them "stay away from police officers"--unlike how I grew up, "the police officer is your friend".

We live in a freaking police state and you WONDER WHY people disrespect you? Go talk to Erich Mielke. He'll tell you. If he could. He's dead. You might be fine, but having a hall monitor on my back all of my adult life is bad enough. NOt to mention the fact that lots of crime committed in this country would be considered tame elsewhere.

I have no use for the heirs of Cromwell, and their morality enforcers. I have no respect for anyone who goes into law enforcement who is OK with arresting a hooker or a guy with a joint. We have bigger problems than that and frankly, having been intimidated by a police officer myself (I won, it was clear intimidation) I can say that if I never see another policeman in my life I will die happy. I have NO respect for hall monitors with badges. Sorry. None.

Craft is what emerges when you hit inspiration over the head with a stick.

and have seen the underbelly where a DUI is covered up for a buddy while ignoring several witnesses and even telling them to get lost.  I have been threatened with arrest for interference for calling a cop's superior to try to give testimony.

I have seen the fruits of nepotism and favoritism and so called top cops felled by their own corruption.  I continue to see the solution as higher salaries (local town here has the starting salary at 21K and a swing shift), more education and training, and clearly defined career paths.  Too often, one dept's problem just moves a couple of counties over and continues his career

      in a lower income neighborhood.

My experiences with law enforcement are similar.
