I had a client who had a grandfather, one of the great 20th century industrial pirates. He built an empire which manufactured things that most people needed. He manufactured them here, and in foreign countries where raw materials and labor were cheaper.

My client sold the whole thing, all the factories, all the facilities. I asked him, "Why?" He told me that it was very simple. He made a percentage in profit from all the goods that were sold. His percentage was limited by competition from other firms who made similar products. His profit, being only a percentage, was limited by the maximum volume he could market.

Money, pure money however, had no such limitations. Elliot Spitzer once gave him a little fine, only a few million, just the cost of doing business. He's doing better and better.

I took me a long time to understand what my client had been talking about. I think I understood around 2008. I can be a little thick sometimes.
