  •  Here's what I did for a woman who wanted to (11+ / 0-)

    be an editor.  I emphasized transferable skills, such as organization, initiative, and mastery of the English language.

    Under "Editing" on her functional resume, I listed the titles of a couple of impressive-sounding documents dealing with environmental science, and what she had done to make them readable and polished.  We didn't feel it necessary to mention that these were her husband[s master's and Ph.D. theses, and that she'd edited them on the kitchen table at night after the kids were in bed.  (Her husband, whose first language was not English, benefited greatly from her efforts, BTW.)

    People think in stereotypes, as I said.  They assume that any work you did was paid work, unless you state that it was volunteer work.  All in all, I was able to write a good resume for this woman, and it did help her get a job.
