  •  Great advice. On the Admin Assist (3+ / 0-)

issue, women, take this seriously. It is one of the reasons women earn less than men overall in professional positions - often men are hired directly into a career-track position out of college, while women are forced to go the admin assistant route until someone decides they are "ready". I had to do that. It handicaps your pay for the rest of your career as you're two years late or so getting into a professional track.

I remember interviewing at Excite! (the defunct search engine company) in the 1990's and I had put the admin assistant title on my resume for a previous job. The woman zeroed in on that and said, "so you were an administrative assistant?" and I said, "Yes, briefly, in my first job out of school." The woman huffed and got up and walked out of the room. Not kidding. I guess she was one of the lucky ones and thought she was all that...

For retail or service jobs, though, there's nothing wrong with having that on your resume and it can be an asset (It's actually valuable experience, even if it's not often appreciated). It generally isn't a handicap except in higher paying jobs (ie, high tech, finance, marketing, management, etc).

That's why I avoid using that title whenever possible when writing resumes.
