    It's hard to catch your own mistakes, especially when you're very familiar with the document.

    So, read the document BACKWARDS, from BACK to FRONT (from the last sentence upwards to the first sentence). This forces  your brain to slow down and read words/sentences as separate entities.

    When reading from front to back, any "flow" you've established can actually encourage you to MISS errors -- because  your brain fills in what it EXPECTS to see.

      Something else that can help, if there is no one else to proofread for you, is to wait at least three days before you do a final proofreading. After three or four days, my brain has forgotten what is supposed to be there and sees what is there.
