of being unemployed for a fair amount of time. Employers think your skills have eroded. Resume help is great but some of us have great resumes already. How do we address that issue of shady practices by employers not to hire the unemployed? We cant fudge being unemployed.

Paul Ryans budget is in fact a suicide note.

you were a consultant.  If being a consultant doesnt make sense, try other things to fill the gap ( online retailer.. did you sell anything on ebay? then there you go)

Pretty sure noone sits and stares at the wall when they are unemployed,  just because you didnt get a weekly check from some fortune 500 company doesnt mean you didnt work and live during that time.

This isnt 1950's, there are no hard set rules any more. I've been self employed my entire adult life. My jobs and titles are what I say they are and were.

But for now, can you put that you've either taken courses to keep up to date in your field, served as vice president or other officer of a technical society or professional society in your field, or--if those aren't options--can you do volunteer work for a nonprofit and lead off with that?

Again, people think in stereotypes, and one stereotype you can use to your advantage is the assumption that if you've donated your time and labor to a given organization, you were paid.

This problem of companies not wanting to hire the long-term unemployed is HORRENDOUS and also immoral, in my book. This is a societal problem, not one that an individual can solve by himself.

In a future diary I want to explore this much more and set forth some ideas I have.
