A separate minimum wage for persons below certain ages.

This is a completely reasonable alternative to any GOP attempt to abolish or change the Minimum Wage Laws: Lower wages for teens working who still live at home. It wouldn't hurt all that badly; it wouldn't affect 'real' jobs; it would be helpful to the service economy; it's just a step backwards, but a less hurtful step to the overall economy.

In the present mood of scorch and burn GOP politics, I'm against giving them any straw to grasp. But I think two minimum wages is a good idea that we have yet to consider, much less implement.

Believe it or not, the companies that offer lower "teen wages" or "training wages", do not lower their profits accordingly. It's just a free and undeserved windfall for them.

Everyone who does the same job should get the same starting pay for it. Period.

      •  agreed - I fail to see how the average job (0+ / 0-)

a teenager does in this country, which isn't necessarily giving them any sort of wonderful "education" for the experience, is worth less than seven bucks an hour.

      •  Yes, thanks! why should I have been paid less (0+ / 0-)

at Micky Ds when I made the fries just as well as anyone else?

      •  And it's going to take jobs away from older (0+ / 0-)

people. Someone who is 50 and working at McDonalds is probably working there because they're trying to make money to survive. A 16 year old working at McDonalds is probably working there for weed money.

        •  Gotta disagree with every post here (0+ / 0-)

You all made good points, but remember this: There is already a separate "illegal" wage being paid to separated members of society--undocumented immigrants.

It may not be the most just solution, but it already works. If I'm not mistaken, the Dream Act has a separate wage minimum for immigrants...please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's just a thought, and your responses are just as thoughtful. But something has to give.

          •  perhaps you're not aware that paying (0+ / 0-)

undocumented immigrants lower than the minimum wage is just as against the law as paying anyone ELSE below the minimum wage.

The solution to the shit pay given to undocumented workers is, of course, to PAY THEM THE FUCKING LEGAL MINIMUM WAGE, not to lower the minimum wage for everybody else.

        •  even if that weren't bullshit (and it is) so what? (0+ / 0-)

Since when do we decide pay levels for a job based on what the employee spends his money on?

If I use my paycheck as an oil rig worker just to take trips to Las Vegas, does that mean I should get paid less for the job?

Your idiotic post sounds a lot like the old excuse that bosses give for paying women less than men---"men need the pay to care for their families--women just use their pay to buy clothes, so they don't deserve the same pay for the same job."

          It's unadulterated horse shit.

      •  Yours is the most valid point (0+ / 0-)

But...I think this potential solution has the promise to make 'real' jobs pay better, if the same company hires entry-level as well as minimum wage earners.

I'm not interested in 'justice' as much as I'm interested in what works. This works in Germany. It might work here.

Anyone not of age is considered a 'child', complete with their own justice system and separate set of laws. There's no real reason there shouldn't be a separate economic system for them, too. They'll get what they earn soon enough.

But I can't deny the basic tenets of your 'free and undeserved windfall'. You got me there. I just think that reality-based capitalism is a bit more nuanced than that.

        •  you're not thinking this through . . .. (0+ / 0-)
But...I think this potential solution has the promise to make 'real' jobs pay better, if the same company hires entry-level as well as minimum wage earners.

Do you think the bosses are idiots?  If you let them pay teens less than "real" workers, why in hell would you not think they'd fire all the "real" workers and replace them all with cheaper teen labor? Just like they're ALREADY firing all the "real" workers and replacing them with cheaper CHINESE workers?

Do you think the boss will voluntarily pay his workers "real" wages when there is a way for him not to?

          You're blithering.

        •  ugh... (0+ / 0-)

          "Reality-based capitalism"?
"They'll get what they earn soon enough"
"I think this potential solution has the promise to make 'real' jobs pay better"

What's the weather like up there in your ivory tower?

You display the same subtle contempt for low-wage earners that the GOPers have turned into religion. There are currently tens of millions of ADULTS with families to support who depend on minimum-wage or near-minimum-wage jobs to put food on the table, gas in the car to get to work, and to pay the obscene medical bills they are smacked with from jobs that provide no decent access to health insurance.
But none of that should bother you, because I assume you have a "real job".
It appears the "narcissism of success" is a spreading infection that has consumed you as well.
