Thanks for sharing DemFromCT.  We shall see how this plays out in the future.  The condition is an important one deserving of further investigation.  Let us all hope one day we find a way to end the condition.

but the observation about twins vs not twins is important.

      •  Important for sure. (0+ / 0-)

But do not twins share a different sort of genetic similarity than siblings?  Or are only fraternal twins are considered?

My best guess may be wrong but the bet goes to some combination of both effects.  There are lots of conditions that fall in the same realm of more complex and difficult than we'd like them to be.

I don't think the numbers (this percentage genetics vs that percentage environment) is as important as the idea that both are significant. but the fact that non-twin sibs have lower concordance than twins means it's womb environment,  not after birth environment (or it's mom's environment, if you will).

there's no question this is complex, and prolly won't ever be as simple as 'look here's the gene for it'.

The evidence looks good for an environmental factor during fetal development.  Now for more information we need lots more studies and more evidence.

In veterinary medicine we know of conditions (for instance hip dysplasia of large breed dogs and cervical vertebral instability of some breeds) which have environment and genetic predispositions.  The process is far too complex to have a simple gene.  Maybe the same holds true for autism.
