I wasn't blaming him for anything.  Chomsky was an influence, and whole language, which he influenced, has a lot of good qualities, as does old-time skill-and-drill.  Trouble arises when there's no clear path to literacy in the early grades. One day they do basal-reader stuff.  The next, they're turning Hansel and Gretel into rap. Teachers in the same school have completely unsynchronized curriculums, and kids get really confused, really early.  At a certain point they just tune out. Then they tunnel through and come to college, vaguely aware that they need degrees but not sure what that might mean.

      when kids come to kindergarten.

middle class kids have been read to all their lives, and live in homes with books, newspapers, etc  "print rich environment".  They come in knowing which way to hold a book, that words have meaning, etc.

poor kids come in with none of that knowledge.  In many cases, no one has ever read to them, there are no books at home, they don't know their letters, let alone the concept that words have meaning.

from that moment forward, there is no clear path to literacy because they are at such different starting lines.

the hardest job in the world is that kindergarten teacher who has a class with both kids in it.
