  •  I am very lucky (14+ / 0-)

in that I teach 12th grade English and AP English in a state where the testing is finished by 11th grade. Except for the AP tests, of course, for those in the class. I got to a school where there was no curriculum for 12th graders, they just read whatever books they wanted, and there was no AP course. I put in a British Lit curriculum, including Beowulf, Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare and those dreaded Romantics!! The horrors!!! I also made them write critically and creatively. My AP students do great on their tests, and my regular students leave knowing a lot more than they used to learn in 12th grade.

My main goal is to challenge them and make them think. I continually challenge their beliefs, such as "Obama is a Muslim." I get into hot water every month or so, from my very conservative principal, and conservative parents who call and complain. Without tenure, my principal would probably love to get rid of me. But this is my job. I challenge liberal beliefs, too, no matter what the kids think, I make them defend it. (This happens to be easier with the liberal beliefs.) This is my job, this is what I do. People, even teens, do NOT like to have their beliefs challenged and they do not like to be told to defend them. Even many of my AP kids. But I tell them, "You are the leaders of tomorrow, you had better be able to see through the rhetoric and propaganda spewed at you every day, or our nation is doomed." I truly believe that. And so I go on, every day, getting beat up by adminstration and some parents. But my kids learn to think.

I stand in Solidarity with Wisconsin.
