  •  Must relate an incident on the (8+ / 0-)

bus in Chicago last week.  A mother and her two young girls got on and the youngest of the girls sat next to me.  She was very sweet looking, well-dressed with her hair beaded and with sparkly flip-flops on her feet.  I mentioned how much I liked her "outfit" and she demurly thanked me.  I asked how old she was and she said she was five.  "Oh, have you gone to kindergarten yet?"  "No, not yet."  "Will you go this fall?"  She replied with a very sad look on her face that she would. I asked why she wasn't all excited about school and told her how wonderful it is to learn so many new things.  Her response was, "Yeah, but when you go to school you have to do homework."  I told her that this was how she would learn all about the world.  She said, "Oh, but school's so boring."  And she hadn't even been yet!!!  After replying that learning things was definitely not boring, I gave up.  I was afraid her mother might take issue with me posing such radical ideas to her child.

It starts so young.  To see a bright-eyed and generally happy appearing child NOT be excited about starting school was incredibly sad.  Most striking to me was that a five year old even understood the concept of boring.  That's tragic!

Oh sure. Whenever I face a budget crisis the first thing I do is ask my employer to cut my salary.

    •  yes, the dumbing down (3+ / 0-)

definitely has cultural roots.  the entire culture of children in school is that learning is a chore, and that those who want to learn are weird.
