    If Washington Democrats don't want the shitty "austerity" that Republicans offer, then there shouldn't be any deals, or talk of compromise.

    National Republicans simply don't have the leeway to bluster at the level of their Minnesota brethren. There's too much money at stake for their benefactors, and they'll back down at the brink of a shutdown.

    Even in Minnesota, I suspect the government shutdown won't last too long. The Republicans will be the ones taking heat for this. The governor wanted to raise taxes on millionaires? He might as well have told the people of Minnesota that he was going to subsidize their cable bills for the next year, and personally wash each of their cars. That's good politics AND good policy.

    Of course, I see Republican obstinence in Washington to be little more than two-way kabuki (it helps them with the Tea Bag contingent, AND it provides political cover to any Democrats who want what they want, but don't want to anger the Democratic base).  But that's a different topic altogether.
