It happened to me, and I grew up in Manhattan.

On Long Island, perfect suburbia, 30 or so years ago. Two school principals, 7th & 8th grades, would only say to my mom that i was a scapegoat. They DID nothing. Seth's story brought a lot of details rushing back, and i didn't even have the multiplier factor of sexuality. I would not have made it through high school had i not announced to mom that i was going to Catholic school, and have her be able to swing that, with some difficulty. Mom sacrificed a lot for her kids from day one, while my parents slowly struggled out of a poverty that was made more bearable by a safety net of two sets of grandparents' pitching in financially in various ways. But her agreeing to what seemed like astronomical tuition for 4 years no doubt literally saved my life. There was NO bullying in my high school. But the scars from middle school were the defining elements of my life, and i would have been a very different and happier person had it not happened. It really left something that could be characterized as a disability. Wish i could collect damages. Only half joking. What a tragedy this is still going on today, the lives that are ruined for nothing. I wish i could do something to help those kids who are suffering.
