    You could also argue about stuff not on the books. The government has made future promises for Social Security, pensions and health costs. These are not included in the debt.

    This would be like having promises your kids to pay for their weddings when they comes, and for the university costs when they go. If the kids are only 5 and 7, you have some time, but if they are 17 and 19 those costs are going to bite into your income (even if they are not actually considered "debt").
