    and we'll be doomed.

All those kites contribute to orbital decay as well.

    We're frakking doomed!
so just how do they power the turbines, you kinda skipped that part, as probably did the source.  Maybe the turbines fly with the kite, and that's an impeller on the front?

the article is ambiguous, or contains an error, or conflict with another one on the same project.

The other article implies that the electrical generation in done in the kites as water flows past it.  And, the electrical energy is transmitted down the wire to the anchor on the see flow, where it is combined with the eletricity from the other kites.  In this explanation the wire is just llike a kite string that conducts electricity.

The interesting point is that the kite is acting in the same way as a sail boat does to generate forward velocity in a different direction than the current, which is also why this design can be more efficient in lower currents.

In this article they seem to imply the generation is being done at the base of the wire, by the leveraged action of the "kite string" perhaps "cranking" a generator in the base, but I think this may be an error, in this version of the article.

I'm on the case and will let ou know what I discover.  I might write to the company, as this technology could also be excellent for Japan, ROC, Iceland, and other countries with lots of surrouding ocean but very precious and limited land space, for solar farm collectors.

      •  The latter would make more sense (0+ / 0-)

There seems to be little point in creating a transmission loss from the very beginning, when the same amount of energy could be created without it (and probably more reliably with less risk of impact) by putting the generator at the other end of the same piece of wire.
