  •  Wow. I never even thought about those (8+ / 0-)

bogus reasons, but they are important.  You can cut and paste, and send it to him as email spam.  LOL!

You make an excellent point about just doing "the same as it ever was" (now you have a hint about the next band that I shall cover in Popular Culture, want to tell all of us who it might be?

The 12th one is extremely disturbing.  Those folks are completely missing the point about the origin of our Nation, and they are dangerous.  As Jefferson said, and I paraphrase, "...this Nation is by no means a Christian Nation...".

Warmest regards,  and thanks for reading and commenting!  I write three times a week on a regular basis, always at 9:00 PM Eastern.  Please join us for other conversations.

David Byrne.  Am drawing a blank on the band's name...unless that was from the Eno/Byrne album "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" which seems wrong.

      Damn!  Bad memory.

    •  Thanks. I'd be pleased to drop by. (5+ / 0-)

I am quite concerned about the church/state issue. In my BIL's case, he's a long way from thinking God is actually speaking to him, let alone Michele Bachmann, but would "vote his values" and feels his values stem from the Bible. (At least that's what I infer from fairly brief discussions.) He would not favor a theocracy, but would not see the danger in it, and would very likely vote in ways that would deliver one.

Fortunately, they raised their kids to think for themselves, and their two sons grew up liberal (thanks in part to the rest of us, who all ended up liberal). Now that teen/young adult issues are settling down, I think they're having a good influence on their parents!

      •  Since I am just a scientist, there is not (5+ / 0-)

any way that I could deconvolute your statement.  In his favor, I would posit that we all "vote our values".  There is nothing wrong with that.

The next statement is the one fraught with danger.  Those who do not see danger in theocracy are not looking at things very well.  More people have been killed because of that than every other cause in the history of the human (and I use the term loosely) race.

Your story has a wonderful ending!  To borrow a title, The Kids are Alright!

        Warmest regards,

      •  I don't know what chapter/verse (5+ / 0-)

it was, but in the New Testament (and I think it's in one of the first four gospels, but my memory could very well be wrong: a Google search should turn it up) Christ says "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's."

This is usually interpreted in liberal Protestantism as "Ya gotta pay yer taxes."

You might want to find that chapter and verse...and invite your BiL and his kids to read it (w/out beating them over the head, of course).

        •  I shall leave it to the keepers of the Gospel (5+ / 0-)

to quote chapter and verse, but I shall be so bold as to say what He meant.

His point was simple.  We live in our times, and we have to assimilate here.  The point was to be part of society (taxes were the largest part then), but do good by everyone.  Is that so hard to do?

I have several stories to tell about doing good to people who wanted to see me imprisoned.

          Warmest regards,
