  •  You gotta add some Republican sex stuff (14+ / 0-)

like "sanctity of heterosexual white male marriage" and "marriage should be between one man and one woman ... and one or two mistresses, prostitutes or male hustlers"

    •  I have taken heat for this, but will say it again, (1+ / 0-)

because I really believe it.  Marriage should be a religious thing.  A contract to live together as spouses should be a state thing.  That does not mean that never the twain can meet, but I certainly understand how both camps think of it.

See, before the government took it over, it was just religious, because women did not have much say.  Now that they do (and rightly so), the rules are evolving.

Here is my bottom line on it:  marriage is a spiritual commitment.  But it comes with a social contract betwixt the two parties involved, and I am assuming that they are adults that legally can enter into such a contract.  The spiritual one belongs to faith, but the social contract certainly belongs to the courts.

Thank you for reading and commenting, my new friend!

      Warmest regards,

I have a new, secret crush. Nothing will come of it, but it is fun.

      •  I once stood (very firmly) (0+ / 0-)

where you stand today. I'm sure much of that had to do with my upbringing and time in the service. (I also was against gays serving openly in the military but that was simply because the rules said they couldn't.)

Once I started challenging some of my once-revered positions on some things and questioning some of the "rules" I'd lived under most of my adult life, I began to question my stance on many. I remain torn on who holds the franchise on the word "marriage" but I refuse to cede the point to the Conservative or Christian mindset that deems it somehow "sanctified" considering the abuse they've heaped on it over the years.

I jokingly ask my gay friends why they would even want to use the term given what it's gone through at the hands of so many alleged married faithful. Now I don't really have a stand on it, pro or con, as I don't feel it has any impact on my personal relationship, past marriage or subsequent divorce!

Nice talking to you, too, new friend.
Will be checking you out around the sandbox!
