    In the 70's, it was church-owned bowling alleys and ice cream parlors.  There were plenty of homeless Vietnam vets on the streets by then.  ;(

      When I was in college in the late 60's.  Too many synagogues and temples in Baltimore and Washington were in grand beautiful structures that cost a fortune.  We kids made our complaint known.   The response - you kids may have a point but we already built these buildings and now we are stuck with them and no good would be served by letting the banks foreclose.  And we had to admit the synagogue and temple officers had a point, too.
